Springfield was founded in 1847 around the Orange and Alexandria Railroad’s Daingerfield Station, currently known as the Backlick Road Virginia Railway Express station, located off Backlick Road. The area was named for “Springfield Farm”, owned by Henry Daingerfield, an Alexandria businessman who sat on the railroad’s board of directors. Although its name was changed to Garfield in 1881 to honor the late President James A. Garfield, who had been assassinated that year, the name “Springfield” was reinstated on June 27, 1910. Springfield became a major retail destination with the Springfield Mall (now Springfield Town Center) opening in 1973–75, as well as the Springfield and Brookfield shopping centers.
